Penguins Split Doubleheader Against Akron

Junior Avrey Schumacher went 3-for-6 with three runs batted in on the day but the Youngstown State softball team split a doubleheader against Akron on Tuesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins won the opener, 6-2, but fell in the nightcap, 8-4.
Youngstown State improves to 13-10 overall while the Zips move to 3-16 overall.
In the opener, Schumacher went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in with a two-run triple while senior Yazmine Romero went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run-scoring triple. Junior Megan Turner also went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Senior Elle Buffenbarger picked up her ninth win of the season striking out four in six innings pitched.
In the nightcap, Schumacher, Turner and freshman Taylor Truran each drove in runs and senior Nikki Saibene scored two of the Penguins's four runs.
Youngstown State returns to Horizon League play, March 18-19, with a three-game series against UIC in Chicago, Ill.
