Penguins Finish Record-Setting Tournament on Sunday at Hollywood Bowl

The Youngstown State bowling team completed a record-setting weekend by going 1-1 in two long best-of-seven Baker matches on Sunday at the Big Red Invitational. The tournament was hosted by Nebraska at Hollywood Bowl in Lincoln, Neb.
The Penguins began the day with a seven-game loss to No. 7 Arkansas State, and they outlasted No. 22 UW-Whitewater for a seven-game win in their second match of the day.
The tournament standings were based on per-game average, and the Penguins finished 19 pins behind the seventh-ranked Red Wolves over 64 games to place fourth. YSU averaged 215.6 for the tournament, Arkansas State averaged 215.9, and the host Huskers led the way at 224.1.
"I loved how we competed through two tough seven-game matches today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "Our energy was positive and powerful, and we did a great job staying focused on our process and being together. We'll enjoy a day off tomorrow before reflecting on the weekend and getting back to work. We are elevating as a group and are hungry for more."
Youngstown State averaged 200.3 on a tough pair against Arkansas State, and the Penguins had 2-0 and 3-2 leads in the match before the Red Wolves rallied for the victory. YSU scored much higher against the Warhawks with a 223.3 average and games of 269, 255 and 247 sprinkled in. The Penguins led 2-0 and 3-1, and UW-Whitewater forced a seventh game with a three-pin win in game six. YSU ended the tournament strong with a 247 that featured a string of six straight strikes starting in the sixth frame.
During the weekend, YSU had its first-ever 300 in Baker play that went on to be featured on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays. The Penguins also had three record-breaking performances on Saturday. Emma Dockery tied the individual single-game record with a 289, Jade Cote set the school record for tournament average at 225.6, and the Penguins averaged a school-best 218.2 collectively.
Youngstown State will have two weeks to practice before finishing its regular season at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic on March 18-20.
