Penguins Extend Winning Streak to Six With Wins Over Norfolk State, Penn

Norfolk, Va. – The Youngstown State softball team extended its winning streak to six games after defeating Norfolk State, 7-2, and Penn, 5-3, on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field.

The Penguins improve to 8-5 on the season.

In the opener against Norfolk State, Buffenbarger turned in a dominant performance in the circle striking out 10 in five innings of relief to pick up her fifth win of the season.

Nikki Saibene went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Megan Turner went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Freshman Bree Kohler hit her first career home run, a two-run shot, and scored a pair of runs.

After the Spartans scored in the bottom of the first, the Penguins answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Turner's single to deep left field score Saibene and, after a wild pitch, a ground out by Avrey Schumacher plated Taylor Truran with the go-ahead run.

Norfolk State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second, but Saibene's single down the right field line put the Penguins up 3-2 in the top of the third.

Kohler's two-run home run to dead center field extended the Penguins lead to 5-2 in the fifth, and Saibene's first home run of the season in the top of the seventh gave the Penguin a 7-2 advantage.

Against Penn, Saibene went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in while Yazmine Romero and Grace Cea each had two hits. Romero also scored three times.

Buffenbarger picked up her sixth win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings of relief and posted two strikeouts.

The Penguins face St. Peter's, Saturday, March 5, at 10 a.m. at the 2022 Scotsman Invitational.
