Box Score Belmont used a three-run third inning to earn a 3-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Friday in the series opener at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.
The Penguins had their two-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 2-2 on the season. Belmont has now won five straight contests to improve to 5-1 on the campaign.
Senior right-hander Jon Snyder suffered his second loss of the season after allowing three runs on four hits and striking out six over a career-high eight innings pitched. All three of the runs charged to Snyder came in the third inning as the senior settled down to retire 13 straight batters between the fourth and eighth innings. The Springboro, Ohio, native retired the side in order in the first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth frames. Snyder recorded a strikeout in four different innings, and he had multiple punchouts in each of his last two frames on the mound.
Dominick Bucko, Padraig O'Shaughnessy and Trey Law each recorded a hit as Belmont outhit YSU 4-3.
The Bruins struck for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning to grab the early edge. Jack Capobianco hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout and reached third on a wild pitch. He would come in score on a one-out double by Sam Hedges, and Guy Lipscomb followed with an RBI triple. John Behrends then brought home Lipscomb with a sacrifice fly to right field that gave Belmont a 3-0 lead.
Youngstown State shaved the Belmont lead to 3-1 with one run on two hits in the top of the seventh inning. O'Shaughnessy started the inning with a bunt single and Steven D'Eusanio drew a one-out walk to set up a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double down the right field line by Bucko.
Belmont starter Joshua South earned the win after allowing one run on three hits and fanning nine batters over seven innings of work. YSU's first hit did not come until the top of the sixth inning as South retired 12 straight batters between the second and fifth frames. He retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth frames while striking out the side in the fourth. Kyle Brennan earned the save after retiring all six batters he faced over the final two innings.
Youngstown State and Belmont will continue this weekend's four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. Both games will be seven innings and broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
