Campbell Notches 300th Win, Buffenbarger Sets Strikeouts Record at Battle at the Bay

Hampton, Va. – Brian Campbell won his 300th game as Head Coach of the Youngstown State softball team, and senior Elle Buffenbarger broke the all-time strikeout record as the Penguins won a pair of games on day one of the Battle at the Bay Tournament.
The Penguins, who have won four straight games to improve to 6-5 on the season, defeated Hampton, 2-1, on Friday morning to record Campbell's milestone victory. The Penguins also defeated Penn, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.
Buffenbarger, who picked up her fourth win of the season with eight strikeouts, tied the strikeout record of 565 with her second whiff of the day to lead off the bottom of the second inning. She broke the record to end the bottom of the frame.
Conchetta Rinaldi began the scoring with her second home run of the season to put the Penguins up, 1-0, in the top of the first inning.
Yazmine Romero, who went 3-for-4 with a double, singled home Avrey Schumacher in the top of the third to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
The Penguins added runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to push the lead to 4-0. Megan Turner doubled home Bree Kohler in the fourth and Romero scored on a double steal in the fifth.
Against Hampton, freshman Bree Kohler went 2-for-3 with a triple and picked up her first collegiate win with a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Senior Nikki Saibene went 2-for-3 with an RBI while sophomore Hailey Niederkohr drove in run.
The Penguins scored both runs in the top of the second inning. Kohler led off the frame with a triple down the right-field line and scored on Saibene's single to right.
Taylor Truran doubled and scored on Niederkohr's base hit.
The Pirates were able to plate a run on a double steal in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Youngstown State faces Norfolk State and Penn, Saturday, at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
