Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games on opening day with a 3-1 loss to Colgate and a 3-2 eight-inning loss to Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon.

The Penguins fall to 0-2 on the season.

In the opener against Colgate, senior Elle Buffenbarger fanned 12, allowed just two earned runs and scattered nine hits in the complete-game performance.

Seniors Yazmine Romero and Alex DeLeon each went 2-for-4 while DeLeon drove in the Penguins' lone run. YSU jumped out in front 1-0 when DeLeon's double plated Hailey Roach in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth, the Raiders tied the game up with a solo home run. Colgate took the lead for good scoring a pair of runs following two YSU errors in the sixth.

YSU threatened in the seventh with two runners on and two outs, but Colgate worked out of the jam to earn the victory.

Against Gardner-Webb, sophomore pitcher Sophie Howell struck out nine but did not allow an earned run in the 3-2 defeat.

Youngstown State tallied just four hits against the Bulldogs. YSU scored lone runs in the third and sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. YSU tied the contest 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Nikki Saibene in the third. In the sixth, the Guins jumped on top when pinch-runner Sydney Payne came home on a wild pitch.

GWU tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and won on a walk-off single an inning later.

Youngstown State takes on Colgate and Rhode Island on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
