Millsboro, Del. – The Youngstown State bowling team took down three ranked teams in bracket play on Sunday to finish third at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The tournament was hosted by UMES at Millsboro Lanes.
The Penguins were sixth coming into the day after two days of qualifying, and they went 3-0 in their three best-of-seven Baker matches on Sunday to move up three spots in the final standings.
"I'm very proud of the ladies," said Youngstown State head coach Doug Kuberski. "They embraced the environment, stayed together, and rocked the process all weekend. We are enjoying our time together on and off the lanes."
In a tournament where low scores plagued many teams in the field, Youngstown State averaged 200.6 as it surged on Sunday. The Penguins outlasted No. 5 Sam Houston 4.5-3.5 behind a 120-73 in a five-frame tiebreaker victory, and they went on to win their next two matches 4-1.
YSU topped 190 in all five of its games against No. 12 Delaware State, including a 226 in game three after DSU held a 196-195 edge in game two to tie the match. Against No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson in the final match, YSU started with a day-high 257, and it won the final three games by 14, 34 and 40 pins.
The Hawk Classic was the fourth and final tournament for the YSU bowling team of the fall semester. The Penguins earned a pair of runner-up finishes and a third-place finish in those four tournaments, and they went 41-13 in head-to-head matches.
Youngstown State's spring slate will begin on Jan. 20 at the Northeast Classic.
