Bowling Collects Four Wins, Qualifies Fifth at Hawk Classic

Millsboro, Del – The Youngstown State bowling team went 4-1 and moved up three spots in the standings on Saturday to qualify in fifth place at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The tournament is being hosted by UMES at Millsboro Lanes.
Youngstown State was eighth coming into the day, and the Penguins topped 900 in each of their four wins in traditional play.
"This group is showing a lot of heart and toughness," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "To bounce back after the rough third set to close the day as strong as the ladies did was impressive to watch. I thought our shotmaking and spare shooting looked solid across the board today. We're excited for Sunday."
The Penguins began the day with a 999-931 win over No. 13 Duquesne, and a 909-823 victory over No. 14 Maryland Eastern Shore followed. YSU then dropped a low-scoring match to No. 19 Morgan State, 833-781, before bouncing back with high scores to end the day. Youngstown State topped Monmouth 1,011-891 for its highest total of the tournament so far, and it finished qualifying with a 968-883 triumph over Saint Francis (Pa.).
Individually, Madyson Marx was the top scorer for the Penguins with a ninth-place total of 1,014. She averaged 202.8 over her five games and topped out at 245 in the victory over No. 23 Monmouth. Ellie Drescher placed 18th with a 975 set, and she bowled a career-best 246 game in the opener against Duquesne. Jade Cote finished 40th with an 895 as the only other Penguin to bowl in all five games.
Youngstown State will begin best-of-seven Bracket play against No. 5 Sam Houston on Sunday at 8:25 a.m.
