Coram, N.Y. – The Youngstown State bowling team went undefeated in head-to-head play and recorded the highest pinfall in the field on a strong opening day at the DezyStrong Classic. The tournament is being held at Coram Country Lanes and is hosted by Adelphi.
The Penguins posted a 5-0 record in their Baker matches on Friday, and five of those wins came against teams ranking in the top 25 of the Preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll. Just as impressively, Youngstown State's five-match total pinfall of 5,131 was 153 pins higher than any other team and 473 pins better than the fourth-place team in the standings.
Youngstown State topped 1,060 in three of their five matches and fired a 1,087 and a 1,086 in consecutive matches to put an exclamation mark on the day. The Penguins bowled 25 Baker games on the day, and they reached 200 in 14 of them.
"Today was a solid start, and I'm very proud of our work," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I like how we are embracing our time together and keeping things simple. Heading into the weekend, our focus is on staying together, having some fun, and letting the results take care of themselves."
The Penguins surpassed 200 in four of their five games against Molloy to win 1,062-879, and they beat No. 11 Mount St. Mary's by 53 pins with a strong 222 to end their second match. The Penguins then battled through a tough set of lanes to beat No. 22 LIU 928-896 to remain undefeated for the day, and they had some of their best scores in program history to close out the event. Youngstown State had a high game of 269 in a 1,087-888 win over Sacred Heart, the preseason favorite in the NEC, and it topped No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson 1,086-954 behind five straight 200 games.
Youngstown State was the only team to top 1,000 three times on Friday, and it posted three of the top four match scores of the day. Louisiana Tech is second in total pinfall at 4,978, Stephen F. Austin is third at 4,830, and Sacred Heart is fourth with 4,658.
Youngstown State will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday as it looks to stay hot in New York. The first match will begin at 9:30 a.m., and all action will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
