Kuberski Earns 250th Victory as Penguins Go 5-0 Again

Coram, N.Y. – The Youngstown bowling team turned in another undefeated day on Saturday and posted the second-highest qualifying total at Adelphi's DezyStrong Classic. The three-day tournament is being held at Coram Country Lanes.

The Penguins went 10-0 in qualifying matches for the first time in program history, and they will be the second seed when the tournament shifts to the best-of-seven Baker bracket on Sunday. Youngstown State totaled 9,954 pins in the 10 qualifying matches, which was 21 pins behind Louisiana Tech. Stephen F. Austin qualified third with 9,870, and there was a big gap down to fourth-place Vanderbilt's total of 9,406.

YSU's second victory of the day held special significance as it was the 250th under head coach Doug Kuberski.

"We embraced the challenges out there today, stayed together, and did a great job maintaining our focus on our process," Kuberski said. "Going to enjoy our evening in New York, and get some solid rest to fuel ourselves for Sunday."

Youngstown State had the highest total pinfall during Friday's Baker play, and it had the third-highest traditional total on Saturday.

The Penguins began the day with a 1,028-971 head-to-head victory over Louisiana Tech, and they battled through lower scores over their next three matches to stay unbeaten. YSU topped Saint Francis (Pa.) 904-891, Merrimack 937-840 and St. Francis Brooklyn 888-834. Youngstown State then ended qualifying with its best total of the day, posting a 1,066-908 victory over Adelphi.

Individually, sophomore Jade Cote earned all-tournament team honors by finishing sixth with a total of 1,038. She reached 200 in four of her five games and ended the afternoon with a 258 in YSU's win over Adelphi. Lyndsay Ennis (999) and Kirsten Moore (991) finished 12th and 13th, respectively, and Madyson Marx placed 25th (947).

Youngstown State will battle Louisiana Tech to start bracket play on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. If the Penguins win against the Lady Techsters, they will earn a bye into the championship match. If YSU drops its opening match, it will take on Stephen F. Austin or Vanderbilt for another opportunity to compete for the championship.
