Moon Township, Pa. -- Sophomore Elis Klein Spindola recorded the 12th hat trick in program history and secure the women's soccer program's first Horizon League Tournament berth since 2014 as the Penguins knocked off Robert Morris, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.
The Penguins finish the regular season with an overall record of 7-7-3 and a school-best 5-3-2 mark in the Horizon League. Robert Morris's season ends with an overall record of 7-7-4 and 1-7-2 in league play.
Klein Spindola's three-goal performance was YSU first hat trick since Allison Ludwig's against Robert Morris in 2010, and the first one in the Horizon League this season.
The Penguins trailed 1-0 at the intermission, but Klein Spindola scored a pair of goals in a 3:47 span to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. She knotted the game at the 51:00 mark with assists from Haley Curtis and Marissa Masano.
The game-winner came at the 54:47 mark from an assist from Regan LaVigna and she sealed the victory with her third score at the 70:14 mark from Masano's second assist of the game.
Brooklynn Kirkpatrick netted six saves in her seventh win of the season, which set the YSU single-season wins record for a goalkeeper.
The Horizon League Championship begins, Sunday, Oct. 30. YSU's opponent has yet to be determined.
