The Youngstown State volleyball team suffered its first three-set home loss of the season on Friday as Green Bay swept the Penguins 25-19, 25-18, 25-17, in Beeghly Center.
The Phoenix hit .372 as a team and limited YSU to a .079 hitting percentage. The Penguins had 34 kills to Green Bay's 38, but YSU had 26 attack errors while Green Bay had just nine. The Phoenix had 12 blocks, and YSU had 14 additional errors.
Penguins sophomore Paula Gursching led all players with 18 kills in 39 swings while hitting .308, but every other YSU pin hitter had more errors than kills. Middle blocker Julia Sell had three kills and a team-best three blocks, and Isabel Schaefbauer notched 19 assists.
For Green Bay, Shannon Coughlin had a team-high 11 kills in 20 attempts, and middle blocker Angie Gromos was dominant with eight kills in 10 swings while adding eight block assists.
Youngstown State did not hold a lead in the match, and the latest tie came at 16-16 in the third set. Green Bay called timeout and proceeded to score nine of the final 10 points of the match. Gursching was long on an attack from the 10-foot line out of the timeout, and the Phoenix followed with three straight blocks.
Youngstown State dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-8 in Horizon League play, while Green Bay improved to 18-7 and 9-2.
Youngstown State will try to bounce back on Saturday as it hosts Milwaukee at 4 p.m.
