Penguins Sit Eighth After First Day at PVAMU Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team averaged a solid 199.2 but came up on the short end in its five head-to-head matches on Friday at the PVAMU Invitational. The tournament is being held at The International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas.

The Penguins, who were ranked eighth in the most-recent National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, faced five teams ranked above them and went 0-5 in those Baker matches. Youngstown State's 4,979 total pinfall ranked eighth in the field but was just 56 pins behind fifth-place Sam Houston. The Penguins competed against five of the top six teams on Friday in head-to-head play.

"I'm really proud of our effort. In terms of the things we can control, we did a solid job for the majority of the day with only a few minor mistakes," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm a firm believer in sample size, and I have a lot of confidence in this team heading into the weekend. We're excited to put into play what we learned from today and come back strong tomorrow."

The Penguins bowled a 257 in their last game in a 998-971 loss to No. 6 Arkansas State in the opening match of the day, and YSU's highest match score followed in a 1,118-1,080 loss to No. 2 McKendree. Youngstown State had four games above 210, including a 246 in game one, but a 168 in the fourth game was costly and the Bearcats held a 90-pin edge in that game.

Youngstown State then shot 1,033 but had another opponent break 1,100 as No. 7 Louisiana Tech countered with a 1,104. The Penguins then fell 997-970 to No. 1 Sam Houston in their fourth match, and No. 5 Vanderbilt took the finale 1,020-925.

YSU will try to move up the standings on Saturday with five traditional matches at the PVAMU Invitational. The first match will begin at 10:25 a.m. Eastern.
