The Youngstown State bowling team opened its spring semester schedule in spectacular fashion on Friday as it broke two school records at the Northeast Classic. The three-day tournament at Bowlero Deptford in Deptford, N.J., is being co-hosted by LIU and Sacred Heart.
The eighth-ranked Penguins set a new standard for highest Baker match with a 1,164, and their five-match total of 5,321 was a new school record by more than 100 pins. The high pinfall puts Youngstown State in second place in the standings behind Vanderbilt with one more day of qualifying.
"We took a lot of our notes and reflections from the semester break and did a solid job as a group putting them into our process," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We also had a solid focus on execution, communication, and really having fun out there. We're ready to enjoy a relaxing evening, rest up, and prepare ourselves to continue elevating this weekend."
The group of Megan Grams, Madyson Marx, Kirsten Moore, Jade Cote and Emma Wrenn bowled from start to finish, and they topped 1,040 in four of their five sets.
The Penguins began the day with a 1,045-958 victory over No. 12 Duquesne, and they followed that with a 1,075-926 win over 17th-ranked LIU. Youngstown State then had its record-setting match against No. 18 Maryland-Eastern Shore with games of 258, 223, 210, 238 and 235 in a 1,164-999 win over the Hawks. YSU slowed to a 930 set in its lone loss of the day to No. 14 Delaware State, which bowled well with a 1,089 total. The Penguins rebounded to post a 1,107, which is the fifth-highest match in program history, in a 53-pin victory over No. 25 Monmouth.
Youngstown State's 5,321 pins topped the previous school record for a five-match Baker round of 5,229, which was set at the Big Red Invitational last February. The previous school record for highest Baker set was 1,145, which also occurred at the Big Red Invitational.
The Penguins will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 9:25 a.m. as they try to stay among the top teams in qualifying.
