Box Score 2 Elle Buffenbarger fired a two-hit complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 3-0 win and a doubleheader split over Green Bay on Friday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field. The Penguins' seven-game win streak was snapped with a 6-5 loss in nine innings in game two.
The Penguins improve to 21-9 overall and 14-4 in the Horizon League while Green Bay is non 17-13 overall and 12-10 in league play.
Buffenbarger allowed just five baserunners the entire game. She retired the first six batters she face before allowing a pair of runners in the top of the third. She gave up hits in the top of the fifth and seventh and a runner reached on a error in the top of the six.
The Penguins scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth when pinch-runner Taylor Boeckmann scored from second on a fielding error.
In the bottom of the fifth, Alex DeLeon's squeeze bunt plated pinch-runner Sydney Payne, who stole second and reached third on a throwing error.
Conchetta Rinaldi's run-scoring single down the left-field line scored Grace Cea for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
In the night, the Penguins jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run first inning. A bases-loaded walk by Avrey Schumacher scored Hailey Niederkohr, who walked, and Nikki Saibene drove in a pair with a single through the right side. Cea's ground out to second base plated Schumacher with the Penguins fourth run.
Green Bay answered with two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.
Youngstown State knotted the game at 5-5 with a run in the bottom half of the fourth. DeLeon was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Jillian Jakse's single to right field. She then scored on Schumacher's ground out to second.
The Phoenix scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.
Freshman Sophie Howell struck out a career-high 11 in six innings of relief.
The Penguins and Phoenix close out the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, April 10. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. YSU will honor its seniors between games.
