Box Score 2 Indianapolis, Ind. -- Senior Maddi Lusk fired a one-hit, complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-0 victory over IUPUI in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins won the opener, 7-6.
The Penguins improve to 18-8 overall and 11-3 in Horizon League play while the Jaguars fall to 7-17 overall and 5-9 in league play.
Senior Nikki Saibene powered the Penguins to the 7-6 game one victory going 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, scored three times and four runs batted in.
Saibene belted a solo home run in the top of the second inning to put the Penguins up, 1-0, and after the Jaguars tied the game at 1-1, she ripped a run-scoring double to left field to regain a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Hailey Roach's single to right field plated Saibene and extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
IUPUI tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth before the Penguins regained a 4-3 lead on back-to-back doubles by Hailey Niederkohr and Lusk in the top of the sixth. Pinch-runner Taylor Boeckmann scored on Avrey Schumacher's ground out, and Saibene's two-run home run gave the Penguins a 7-3 lead.
The Jaguars scored three times in the bottom of the seventh before Elle Buffenbarger struck out her ninth batter for the game's final out with the bases loaded.
Buffenbarger, who scattered six hits, recorded her eighth win of the season.
In the nightcap, Schumacher's two-out, two-run double down the left-field line to score Jillian Jakse and Alex DeLeon in the top of the first was all the offense Lusk needed.
Lusk, who improved to 8-2 on the season, allowed just four bases runners and recorded her first shutout of the year.
Jakse went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and drove in another. Conchetta Rinaldi went 2-for-4 with a double.
