Box Score 2 Moon Township, Pa. -- Elle Buffenbarger fired a two-hit, complete-game shutout and tied a career high with 13 strikeouts to lead the Youngstown State team to a 3-0 win over Robert Morris in game one of a doubleheader at the North Athletic Complex. The Penguins dropped game two, 6-5, in eight innings.
Youngstown State improves to 28-10 overall and 21-5 in Horizon League play while the Colonials move to 22-14 overall and 17-11 in the league.
Jillian Jakse and Nikki Saibene each belted solo home runs in the top of the fourth inning to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead and provided Buffenbarger all the offense she needed.
The Penguins also scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning.
Buffenbarger picked up her 14th win of the season, which is a career best, and struck out at least 10 batters for the ninth time this season.
In the nightcap, the Penguins fell behind 3-0 early after the Colonials plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Youngstown State answered with a three-run fourth inning to knot at the game at 3-3. Maddi Lusk led off the frame with a single, advance to second on a ground out and scored on Jakse's single through the right side.
Avrey Schumacher, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, double to left-center field to plate Jakse from first. Pinch-runner Sarah Bader stole and scored on Saibene's ground out to shortstop.
The Colonials' Madison Riggle hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, but the Penguins fought back again.
Saibene led off the inning with a double to right center, which extended her hitting streak to 16 games, and pinch-runner Sydney Payne advance to third on an error. Hailey Niederkohr's fielder's choice scored Payne with the game-tying run.
Youngtown State took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth, 5-4, on Schumacher's single down the right field line that scored Lusk.
Robert Morris' Charlotte Grover's two-out, bases-loaded bloop single to right field scored a pair of runs to snap the Penguins seven-game winning streak.
The Penguins and Colonials close out the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m.
