Box Score 2 Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State hit a total of seven home runs and received another dominating pitching performance from senior Elle Buffenbarger en route to a doubleheader sweep of IUPUI, 12-7, and 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
With the wins, the Penguins improve to 16-8 overall and 9-3 in Horizon League play while the Jaguars fall to 7-15 overall and 5-7 in league play.
In the opener, the Penguins used a nine-run fifth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit to take an 11-5 lead and cruise to the game one victory.
Down by three heading into the fifth, senior Nikki Saibene led off the frame with a solo home run to get the Penguins within two, 5-3. Alex DeLeon's base-loaded single plated pinch-runner Taylor Boeckmann to cut the score to 5-4, and freshman Jillian Jakse belted a grand slam over the left field fence to give the Penguins an 8-5 advantage.
Two batters later, Yazmine Romero's two-run inside-the-park home run gave the Penguins an 11-5 lead.
IUPUI scored once in the bottom of the fifth before Grace Cea's run-scoring single gave the Penguins a 12-6 lead.
The Penguins got off to a fast start with back-to-back home runs by Hailey Niederkohr and Maddi Lusk to lead off the game to put YSU up 2-0.
IUPUI scored twice in the bottom of the first and twice more in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.
Jakse led the Penguins going 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Cea also had three hits in the Penguins 15-hit barrage.
In the nightcap, sophomore Avrey Schumacher was all the offense Buffenbarger needed to pick up her seventh win of the year.
Schumacher belted a pair of home runs and drove in all three of YSU's runs in the 3-0 victory. Buffenbarger, who became the second player in YSU history to record 400 career strikeouts, fanned 11 and allowed just two hits.
The Penguins and Jaguars close out the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, April 3. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
