Box Score 2 The Youngstown State softball team won the for 15th time in the last 17 games as it swept a Horizon League doubleheader from Green Bay, 3-1, 2-0, on Senior Day on Saturday at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins improve to 23-9 overall and 16-4 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 17-15 overall and 12-12 in league play.
In the opener, Elle Buffenbarger earned her 11th win of the season and her ninth in league play by scattering seven hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game performance.
Senior Elizabeth Birkbeck went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nikki Saibene, who extended her hitting streak to 10 games, went 2-for-2.
The Penguins scored in the bottom of first on Jillian Jakse's sacrifice fly to deep left-center field.
Green Bay knotted the game in the top of fourth before the Penguins scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Jakse hit a one-out double to right center and Avrey Schumacher plated pinch-runner Sydney Payne with a single to left to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead and advance to second on the throw home. After a Saibene single up the middle, Birkbeck drove home Schumacher with a single up the middle to put YSU ahead, 3-1.
After allowing a one-out double, Buffenbarger recorded her sixth strikeout and induced a foul out to close out the game.
In the nightcap, Maddi Lusk fired a four-hit, complete-game shutout with four strikeouts for her 10th win of the year.
Youngstown State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and was all the offense Lusk needed.
Yazmine Romero led off the frame with a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lusk and stole third. Jakse's ground out to second base plate Romero with the game's first run.
Saibene's hard-hit infield single plated DeLeon, who was hit by a pitch.
Youngstown State hosts Oakland in a four-game Horizon League series, April 16-17, at the YSU Softball Field. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 p.m.
