Jon Snyder struck out a career-high 12 batters and did not allow a hit over six scoreless innings, but Purdue Fort Wayne used a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 1-0 on Sunday in game one of a doubleheader at Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio.

After Snyder departed following the sixth inning, Chad Coles came on in the top of the seventh and issued a leadoff walk to Andrew Arteaga. Alex Evenson then drew another walk before Joel Hake took over on the mound. After a sacrifice bunt by Jack Lang moved the runners up 90 feet, Trenton Stoner grounded into a fielder's choice that saw third baseman Blaze Glenn throw out pinch runner Ryan Mollette at the plate for the second out of the inning. After Andrew Lawvere drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Aaron Chapman delivered the game-winning single into right center. Chapman's walk-off was the first and only hit of the game for Purdue Fort Wayne.

With the loss, Youngstown State had its three-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play. Purdue Fort Wayne snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league action.

The late rally by the Mastodons overshadowed a dominating pitching performance from Snyder. The junior-right hander's 12 strikeouts were the most by a Penguin since Phil Klein fanned 13 batters against Toledo on March 20, 2011. Snyder's 12 K's were also the most by a Penguin in league play since Klein had 12 against Valparaiso on May 9, 2009.

Snyder started fast as he retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the first inning. He struck out the side in the home half of the second inning as he sat down the first six batters he faced. Snyder fanned five straight batters between the first and second frames. He struck out the side again in the bottom of the third, and he did the trick for a third time in the fifth.

Snyder had at least one strikeout in five of the six innings he was on the mound, and he had multiple punch outs in four different frames. The Springboro, Ohio native retired the side in order in three different innings. Snyder had eight strikeouts over the first three innings as he retired 15 of the first 18 batters he faced.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Jacob Myer limited Youngstown State to a season-low three hits and struck out five batters in a seven-inning complete game shutout. Myer, who earned his first victory of the season, retired 16 of the first 19 batters he faced including each of the first six and nine of the first 10.

Phillip Glasser had two of YSU's three hits as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Braeden O'Shaughnessy collected the Penguins' third and final hit as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning.

The Mastodons got runners to second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third, but Snyder struck out Garett Lake to get out of the jam. The only other time that Purdue Fort Wayne got a runner in scoring position against Snyder was in the sixth inning. Lake drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, but Snyder struck out Justin Greene and got Lucas Kolovitz to pop out to second base.

Youngstown State got a runner into scoring position in four straight innings between the third and the sixth, but it was unable to capitalize. Nick Caruso drew a leadoff walk in the top of the third and reached second base on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Law. However, Myer induced two straight fly-ball outs to strand Caruso at second.

Glasser led off the top half of the fourth inning with a single to center field, and he tagged and advanced to third on a foul out to right field by Glenn. Myer avoided any damage again as he got back-to-back strikeouts of Steven D'Eusanio and Padraig O'Shaughnessy to keep the game scoreless.

Caruso reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a groundout in the top of the fifth inning, but Myer got Lucas Nasonti to fly out to right field for the third and final out. YSU threatened again in the top of the sixth when Glasser reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, Myer induced a pop out and a groundout to keep the Penguins off the board.

Coles was saddled with the loss for YSU as he was responsible for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

YSU pushed its lead to double digits with three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. Good led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on a one-out RBI single by Glenn. After an O'Shaughnessy single, Swarmer delivered a two-run single to left field that pushed the Penguins lead to 11-1.

Purdue Fort Wayne responded with three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the seventh. Chapman came through with an RBI single, Lake drew a bases-loaded walk and Greene drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut YSU's lead to 11-4.

Wehler and Glasser hit back-to-back singles to begin the top half of the eighth inning, and Wehler came in to score when Good reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 12-4 game.

The Mastodons made things interesting late as they scored four times on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to draw within four runs at 12-8. Lawvere began the rally with a double, and he was doubled home two batters later by Stoner. Garrett Maish drew a bases-loaded walk and Robert Young III hit a two-run single to pull Purdue Fort Wayne within striking distance.

The Penguins would add insurance in the top of the ninth when O'Shaughnessy led off the inning by sending his first home run of the season over the wall in left field. Dalton Earich retired the Mastodons in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure YSU's first series victory of the 2021 season.

Chapman and Greene each had two hits to lead Purdue Fort Wayne offensively while seven different Mastodons drove in at least one run.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Michael Madura suffered the loss after surrendering six runs, five of them earned, on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Ryan Robison permitted three runs on two hits over 0.2 innings while Gerald Pintarich was responsible for two runs on three hits over one inning. Kevin Fee and William Wentz each allowed a run on two hits in two combined innings.

Travis Perry allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over a third of an inning while Matt Brosky gave up four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Earich did not allow a run over the final 1.1 innings.

The Penguins will remain on the road next weekend as they'll travel to preseason Horizon League favorite Wright State for a four-game series at Nischwitz Stadium beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
