Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team battled back from a six-run deficit to earn a thrilling 11-10 victory and the 3-1 series win over Wright State in the series finale on Sunday at Eastwood Field.
Youngstown State improves to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in Horizon League play while Wright State drops to 13-8 and 13-3 in conference action. The Raiders had won 12 straight games and were 12-0 in Horizon League play coming into the weekend series. With the victory, YSU won its first series against Wright since taking two of three games at Eastwood Field in April of 2015. The Penguins are now 6-1 at Eastwood Field for the first time since 2003. YSU started 5-0 at Eastwood Field for the first time in program history.
The Raiders scored five times in the top of the first inning and once in the second to build a 6-0 advantage. The Penguins chipped away at the lead with one run in the third and four runs in the fifth to get within a run at 6-5. After Wright State added a run in the sixth, YSU scored once in the home half to make it 7-6. The Raiders scored three times in the seventh to move in front 10-6 before the Penguins tied the game at 10-10 with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Jeff Wehler reached on a throwing error to begin the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Phillip Glasser. After Wehler advanced to third on a groundout by Nick Caruso, Steven D'Eusanio hit a hard ground ball that ricocheted off Wright State shortstop Damon Dues and into center field for a bad-hop single allowing Wehler to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
YSU closer Gary Clift Jr. earned his first win of the season after recording the final six outs for the Penguins. In the top of the ninth, Wright State got back-to-back singles from Konner Piotto and Gehrig Anglin to begin the inning. However, Clift got Alex Alders to pop into a 5-4 double play while attempting to bunt and Dues flied out to center field to end the ballgame. Clift Jr. allowed two hits over two scoreless innings.
D'Eusanio posted a career-high four hits and drove in a season-high four runs to lead YSU offensively. Lucas Nasonti went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Turner Grau was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a run scored.
Chad Coles pitched four strong innings of relief to help facilitate YSU's comeback effort. The senior allowed two earned runs on five hits over a season-high four innings while the Penguins made their push. YSU starter Nick Perez surrendered six runs, five of them earned, on five hits over two innings while Joel Hake was responsible for one run on two hits in one inning of work. Hake, the YSU all-time appearances leader, made the 100th appearance of his career on Sunday.
Wright State's Julian Greenwell suffered the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Mitch Gremling allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits over 1.1 innings while Sam Wirsing was responsible for one run on two hits in 0.2 innings. WSU starter Alex Theis allowed five runs, two of them earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings.
The Raiders jumped in front immediately with five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Dues hit the first pitch of the game for a single, Quincy Hamilton walked and Tyler Black reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Zane Harris followed with an RBI single before Sammy Sass hit a grand slam to right field to give Wright State an early 5-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning, Alders drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a single to right field by Dues. Hamilton then brought home Alders with an RBI groundout to first base to put Wright State in front 6-0.
The Penguins got on the board in the bottom of the third when Nasonti reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Wehler.
YSU shaved Wright State's lead to 6-5 with four runs on two hits and an error in the home half of the fifth inning. Blaze Glenn drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI bunt single up the first base line by Nasonti. Glasser walked with the bases loaded and D'Eusanio delivered a two-out, two-run single through the left side.
The Raiders responded with one run on two hits in the top of the sixth. Anglin reached with a one-out single and advanced to second on a fly out to center field. Dues then sent a single through the right side that scored Anglin to push Wright State's edge to 7-5.
The Penguins pulled back within a run at 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth when Glenn drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single from Nasonti.
The Raiders answered with three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 10-6. Justin McConnell led off the inning with solo home run to left field, Piotto brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and Anglin recorded an RBI single.
Youngstown State scored four runs on three hits and an error in the home half of the seventh to even the score at 10-10. Glasser led off with a single to second base, Caruso walked and D'Eusanio delivered an RBI single to center field. Grau followed with an RBI double down the right field line that plated Caruso. Glenn drove home D'Eusanio with a sacrifice fly and Grau scored on an error by Wright State first baseman Zane Harris to tie the game.
Anglin and Dues each had three hits to lead the Raiders offensively. Sammy Sass went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBIs.
Youngstown State will continue Horizon League play on Thursday when it opens a four-game series against UIC at Eastwood Field. First pitch for Thursday's series opener is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
