Penguins Drop First Match at Cleveland State

The Youngstown State volleyball team lost the first of its two matches at Cleveland State this week, falling in three sets to the Vikings on Monday evening at Woodling Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-21, 25-15, 25-12.
Normal libero Margaux Thompson played outside hitter and led the Penguins with a match-high nine kills while posting a .240 attack percentage. The senior added an ace and seven digs for YSU. Reilly Seagroves led the defensive effort with 12 digs.
Chelsea Penfield had eight kills in 10 attempts, and four Vikings finished with seven kills apiece. Cleveland State outhit the Penguins .279-.096, and the Vikings had a 6-0 edge in blocks.
Youngstown State scored five straight points behind Thompson's serve early in the first set and built a 5-2 lead, and the Penguins were either tied or ahead until Cleveland State took a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. YSU's final lead was at 17-16 on a kill by Isidora Sisic, and the final tie came at 19-19 before the Vikings went on a 6-2 run to close out the set.
Although the Penguins never led in the second set, the score was tied at 10-10 following a Thompson kill. Cleveland State scored the next five points to go ahead 15-10, and it concluded the set with another 6-2 run. The Vikings then took a 7-2 lead early in the third and never looked back.
YSU and Cleveland State will finish their two-game series on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Woodling Gymnasium. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
