The Youngstown State volleyball team held UIC to well below its season attack percentage entering the match, but the Penguins couldn't generate enough offense to match the defensive effort in a 3-0 loss to the Flames on Monday evening. The set scores at Beeghly Center were 25-16, 25-19, 25-21.
The Flames came into the night ranked third in the country in kills per set, and YSU posted four more kills in the match. The Flames had 10 serving aces and eight blocks to offset the kill differential. UIC hit .186 on Monday despite holding a .313 attack percentage through its first four matches of the season.
Alexia Byrnes led the Penguins with eight kills, nine digs and 13 assists, and Josi Borum notched seven kills. Morgan Cleevely and Margaux Thompson had 12 kills apiece. YSU had a .094 attack percentage and one serving ace.
Paola Santiago had 12 kills in 27 attempts to lead the Flames.
UIC took the opening set 25-16, but YSU made a late push in the second set and got as close as 19-17 on a Byrnes kill. UIC scored six of the final eight points of the set to go up 2-0. The Penguins and Flames were tied at 19 in the third following a kill by Isidora Sisic, but the Flames held the upper and down the stretch again and closed out the match on a 6-2 spurt.
Youngstown State and UIC will wrap up their two-game series on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
