Box Score 2 Norfolk, Va. -- The Youngstown State softball team opened the 2021 season with a pair of losses to Norfolk State, 7-0, and 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The Penguins dropped the opener, 7-0, and tallied just two hits in the opener.
Freshman Sophie Howell struck out seven in the loss.
The Spartans hit home runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to the shutout.
In game two, junior Grace Cea went 3-for-3 and drove in a run and senior Elle Buffenbarger struck out eight in the loss.
The Penguins and Spartans close out the series with a doubleheader, Sunday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
