Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team fell 10-4 to Troy on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field in the 2021 season opener for both teams.
The Penguins trailed 3-2 after two innings, but the Trojans outscored YSU 7-2 the rest of the way to pull away and secure their first victory of the season.
Troy outhit Youngstown State 14-6 as five different Penguins recorded a hit in the contest. Nick Caruso hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, the first of his YSU career. Caruso went 2-for-4 with a team and career-high three RBIs. Steven D'Eusanio and Phillip Glasser each doubled while Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Lucas Nasonti each notched a single.
Kyle Mock paced the Trojans offensively, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Clay Stearns went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Drew Frederic and William Sullivan recorded two hits apiece, and Sullivan hit a solo home run.
Troy starter Orlando Ortiz earned the victory after surrendering just two runs on three hits and fanning 11 batters. Relievers Dominick Miller, Matt Snell and Lance Johnson combined to allow two runs on three hits over the final three frames.
YSU starter Colin Clark suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits and striking out four batters in 4.2 innings of work. Kenny Misik did not allow a hit and struck out a pair over 0.2 innings in his first collegiate appearance. Brandon Matthews was responsible for two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings.
Rigsby Mosley led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, and he scored on a one-out RBI double to right center from Dalton Sinquefield. Sullivan followed with a double down the left field that plated Sinquefield. Austin Garofalo then delivered a sacrifice fly to center that scored Sullivan to give Troy a 3-0 lead.
After Blaze Glenn was hit by a pitch to begin the top of the second inning, Caruso hit a two-run home run to left field two batters later to cut the Trojans' advantage to 3-2.
Troy extended its lead to 5-2 in the home half of the third inning on a two-run homer from Stearns. Sullivan then hit his solo shot in the bottom of the fourth to push Troy's lead to 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Seth Johnson reached on a one-out double, and Stearns followed with an RBI triple to center field. Mosley proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to center that increased Troy's lead to 8-2.
O'Shaughnessy drew a leadoff walk to begin the top of the seventh inning. After stealing second base and reaching third on a fly out, O'Shaughnessy scored YSU's third run on a two-out RBI single from Nasonti.
Troy plated its ninth run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh when Stearns was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI single by Frederic. The Penguins pulled within five runs at 9-4 in the top of the eighth as Dominick Bucko drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI single from Caruso. However, Troy would get the run back in the home half of the inning as Garofalo drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Mock.
The Penguins and Trojans will continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. ET. Live audio will be available for both games on YSNLive.com.
