The Youngstown State bowling team picked up four more head-to-head wins and posted the third-highest pinfall of the day on Saturday at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic, which is being held at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
The Penguins moved up three positions in the standings and qualified sixth for Sunday's bracket of best-of-seven Baker matches. Youngstown State recorded a total pinfall of 4,989 on Saturday for an average game score of 199.56. After a slow start on Friday, the Penguins averaged 199.53 over their final eight matches of qualifying. That average would have been the third-best in the field of 15 if YSU could have maintained it through all 10 matches.
"I love how we came out of the gates aggressively and maintained positive and powerful energy all day," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We had a great reflection session yesterday evening and our notes definitely helped our elevation. Our focus is on enjoying the evening, getting some solid rest, and bringing our A-game tomorrow."
The No. 7 Penguins went up against five teams that were ranked in the NTCA Preseason Top 25 Poll, and they went 4-1 against them. YSU began the day with a 991-950 win over No. 23 LIU, and the Guins followed that up with a 1,022-987 victory over No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson. YSU had its scores dip in a 1,053-923 loss to No. 13 Mount St. Mary's in the third match of the day, but Penguins bounced back to win their final two matches. Youngstown State topped 20th-ranked and tournament host Maryland-Eastern Shore 1,040-907, and it finished the round with a 1,013-984 victory over No. 5 North Carolina A&T.
Freshman Jade Cote was the Penguins' top individual finisher in Saturday's traditional format with a five-game score of 1,035 to place 11th. Cote became the third different Penguin in four tournaments to lead the team in average, and her highest game was a 244 in the win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Senior Emma Wrenn finished three spots below her teammate with a 1,014, and Megan Grams (989) and Lyndsay Ennis (987) finished 21st and 22nd respectively.
The Penguins will begin bracket play on Sunday at 8:25 a.m. against No. 14 Delaware State, which qualified fifth. Youngstown State can finish as high as third with three victories on Sunday.
