The Youngstown State bowling team averaged 199.7 over the final 15 games to end the opening day of the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic with a 3-2 record. The tournament is being held at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
YSU, which was ranked seventh in the NTCA Preseason Top 25 Poll, is ninth in total pinfall after the first day of qualifying. The tournament field of 15 teams features 13 programs ranked in the NTCA Preseason Poll. The Penguins knocked down 4,800 pins on Friday, and they are 126 pins out of the top five.
"This group's heart and resiliency never cease to amaze me," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "The ladies battled all day together and are growing closer and closer as a unit. I need to put them in better positions out of the gate, and we need to come out strong with more energy. If we can find our stride early, I like our chances of making a strong run this weekend."
The Penguins got off to a slow start and averaged 180.8 over their first 10 games as they dropped their first two head-to-head matches. YSU began the day with a 941-920 loss to No. 25 Adelphi, and it followed with a 958-888 loss to No. 11 Duquesne. At that point, the Penguins were 12th in the standings.
YSU responded immediately by posting its highest set of the day in its next match in a 1,058-860 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Penguins had games of 200, 230, 214, 180 and 234 in the win over the Terriers. YSU then shot 966 in a 40-pin victory over Wilmington, and a 236 game highlighted a 968-780 victory over Sacred Heart in the finale.
