Bowling Places Second at Dezy Strong Classic for Second Straight Runner-Up Finish

The Youngstown State bowling team battled a top-four team in the championship match for the second straight tournament and earned its second runner-up finish of the season on Sunday at the Dezy Strong Classic. The tournament was hosted by Adelphi at Coram Country Lanes in Coram, N.Y.
The second-place finish was an impressive result after the Penguins were sixth after the conclusion of Friday's Baker round and began Saturday with an 890 score. YSU climbed up to fourth for Sunday's bracket, and the Penguins swept third-seeded Stephen F. Austin and second-seeded Tulane 4-0 before the 4-2 loss to the Commodores.
The Penguins won four close games against SFA as each game was decided by seven pins or fewer. Youngstown State averaged 187.25 in the four games while Stephen F. Austin averaged 182.5. Youngstown State then averaged 196.75 in its 4-0 sweep of Tulane to set up the championship match against Vanderbilt.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the match, but Vanderbilt won game three by seven and game four 219-180 to get back to square. The Commodores then bowled a 235 and a 229 over the next two games to claim the title.
Youngstown State will be idle the first weekend of November before competing in back-to-back tournaments to close out the fall slate. The Penguins will bowl at the SFA Ladyjack Classic on Nov. 12-14 in Kenosha, Wis., and they'll compete at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Del., on Nov. 19-21.
