Win Over Vanderbilt Highlights Day One at Sheridan Lanes

The Youngstown State bowling team went 3-2 in head-to-head Baker matches and picked up an impressive victory over No. 4 Vanderbilt on the opening day of the MOTIV Ladyjack Classic. The tournament is being hosted by Stephen F. Austin at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.

The Penguins had a five-match total pinfall of 4,999, which was one-pin shy of a 200 average for the day. Youngstown State bowled at least 946 in all five of its matches and topped out at 1,079 in the win over the Commodores to end the round. YSU sits fifth in the team standings with one more day of qualifying remaining before Sunday's bracket play.

"We did a solid job playing our game today and taking it one shot at a time," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "There are some things that are out of your control out there, and I sense us getting stronger and stronger with embracing a focus on what we do and how we do it and letting that other stuff take care of itself. We look forward to an evening of rest and have our eyes on elevating our game heading into the weekend."

The Penguins began the day with a 946-921 win over fellow Southland Bowling League school Valparaiso, and they topped Lewis 966-850 to improve to 2-0 on the day. Youngstown State then broke 1,000 for the first time in the tournament but fell by 15 pins, 1,024-1,009, to No. 1 Nebraska. YSU lost a 21-pin decision to No. 15 Maryville 1,020-999, but the Penguins bounced back to take down Vanderbilt 1,079-1,047.

The 1,079 set was the sixth-highest Baker total in program history, and the Penguins' last four games against Vanderbilt were 246, 235, 210 and 225.

Youngstown State will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday, beginning with a match against SFA at 10:25 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will also compete against Aurora, North Central, No. 24 Marian and Carthage in the round.
