Bowling Finishes Strong Week in Fifth at PVAMU Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team finished off a solid weekend at the PVAMU Invitational by beating No 19 Tulane in bracket play and placing fifth overall at the tournament held at USA Bowl in Dallas.
The 10th-ranked Penguins placed ahead of No. 19 Tulane, No. 9 Louisiana Tech and No. 7 Stephen F. Austin at the tournament, and they finished with four head-to-head victories over top-10 opponents. YSU was 8-5 overall across the three days in it head-to-head matches.
Youngstown State's strong Saturday performance vaulted them up to the third seed in Sunday's bracket play, and the Penguins lost to No. 5 Sam Houston State and No. 4 Nebraska before their win over the Green Wave. YSU lost 4-0 to the Bearkats in the opening match, then it dropped a 4-2 decision to the Huskers. Youngstown State trailed Tulane 3-2, and it bowled a 243 in game six on its way to the seven-game victory.
"Today was a grind, and I love how the ladies responded with a tough seven-game win to end the day," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We had a lot of fun competing in the event and enjoyed the overall experience. We also have a lot of positives to build from and some great notes to study as we look to elevate for our next event."
Megan Grams was named to the all-tournament team, and she also received the award for highest game. Grams bowled a 258 on Saturday as part of a five-set total of 1,075 that earned her a runner-up finish among a prestigious field of individuals.
Youngstown State is idle next week, but it will begin a stretch of three straight competition weekends on Feb. 12. The Penguins will bowl at the James Brown Invitational, the Mid-Winter Invitational and the Big Red Invitational over the final three weeks of February.
