Penguins Complete Sweep With Four-Set Win Over IUPUI

The Youngstown State volleyball team prevailed in another close match with IUPUI on Tuesday evening, beating the Jaguars 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24 at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins, who won in five sets on Monday, swept the season-opening series and are now 2-0 this spring. YSU endured 37 ties and 22 lead changes, and it scored five of the final seven points of the night.
Sophomore Josi Borum led the Penguins offensively with 12 kills, and Alexia Byrnes and Amanda Lebioda both had nine kills. Byrnes was one kill shy of a triple-double for the second straight night as she added 21 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
Allie Pogue had a match-high 17 kills on a .406 attack percentage to lead IUPUI.
Much like Monday's match, serving played a big part in Tuesday's result. The Penguins had 10 aces, including four straight by Byrnes in the second set. IUPUI had just four aces and 15 serving errors, seven more than YSU.
Borum, Byrnes and Lebioda each had four kills in the opening set as YSU hit .310 as a team, and the Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the match after taking the second set behind four more kills by Borum and Byrnes' four aces.
IUPUI got nine kills from Pogue in the third set as it won 25-21, and it led 22-21 in the fourth. Following a YSU timeout, Emily Alan's serving error allowed YSU to sideout and tie the score. Borum and Kiley Mitchell blocked Madeline Haines to make it 23-22, and Haines hit long on the next rally to give the Penguins two match points. IUPUI was able to knot the score at 24, but a kill by Borum and an attack error by Corrissa Remter ended the match.
Youngstown State will play on the road next week with two matches at Purdue Fort Wayne.
