The Youngstown State bowling team posted the third-highest pinfall of the day as it started up its spring semester schedule on Friday at the Columbia 300 Saints Invite. The tournament is being held at Bowlero Lakeside in Valley Park, Mo., and is hosted by Maryville.
The Penguins went 1-3 in head-to-head Baker matches, but their total pinfall of 4,536 was the third-best in the 11-team field. Youngstown State averaged 181.4 in its 25 games and topped 880 in each of its first four matches.
"I'm very proud of the effort today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "Pair-to-pair is quite challenging this week, and the ladies communicated well all day and demonstrated a lot of toughness. We'll enjoy a relaxing evening and have ourselves ready to elevate tomorrow. I love our chances heading into the weekend."
Nebraska leads the field with a first-day total of 4,696 pins, and McKendree sits second with 4,627. The Penguins are 91 pins behind the Bearcats, and they are 17 pins ahead of fourth-place Maryville.
Youngstown State dropped its first two matches of the day, falling 979-888 to No. 18 Maryville and 970-918 to No. 1 McKendree. YSU's win was a 949-829 decision against Quincy in the third match of the day, and the Penguins followed with a 945 in a bye. YSU lost its final match 862-836 to Upper Iowa.
The Penguins will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Live video will be streamed on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
