The Youngstown State bowling team earned four head-to-head victories and remained in the top four of the team standings at the end of Saturday's five traditional games at the Columbia 300 Saints Invite.
YSU totaled 4,635 pins on Saturday for an average game of 185.4. The Penguins are fourth in total pinfall through 10 matches, and they need to remain in the top four after one more traditional match on Sunday morning to be in the championship bracket. YSU is 17 pins behind third-place Maryville, and the Penguins have a 150-pin cushion on fifth-place Lincoln Memorial.
Individually, Emma Wrenn is second in total pinfall after posting a 1,082 set in her five games on Saturday. She was one of seven bowlers to average at least 200, and her total would be the third-highest total in school history for a five-game tournament. She has one more game on Sunday, and she needs to bowl a 190 to break YSU's record for pinfall in a six-game tournament.
"It's been a total team effort, and I see us growing closer as a group each day," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We are enjoying the opportunity to compete and are finding our competitive stride the more reps we get each day. We'll look to continue elevating our game tomorrow."
The Penguins' highest set of the day came in their first match when they posted a 968-919 win over Lewis. YSU followed with a 947-901 victory against No. 23 Lincoln Memorial, and its lone loss came in the third match against No. 4 Nebraska, 1,082-878. YSU rebounded to win its last two matches, beating Kentucky Wesleyan 935-838 and Tusculum 907-843.
Behind Wrenn, Sarah Florence is 17th in the field with a five-game total of 943. Emma Dockery's total of 880 ranks her 29th.
Sunday's action at Bowlero Lakeside in Valley Park, Mo., begins at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will complete qualifying with one traditional match against Drury, and bracket play will follow.
