Softball Picks Up Two Wins at Memphis Tournament Saturday

Memphis, Tenn.-- Junior Elle Buffenbarger struck out a career-high 12 batters, senior Maddi Lusk hit a pair of home runs and junior Yazmine Romero provided a game-winning hit as the Youngstown State won a pair of games at the University of Memphis Softball Tournament on Saturday.
The Penguins (8-4) defeated Western Carolina, 4-2, and Indiana State, 4-3, and are off the program's best start after 12 games since going 9-3 in 2012.
In the opener against the Catamounts, Lusk belted a two-run home run in the bottom the third to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
The Catamounts tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Penguins answered with two in the bottom half of the inning. Nikki Saibene led off the sixth with walk and advanced to second on a single by Grace Cea. Conchetta Rinaldi singled up the middle to plate Saibene, and Tatum Christy's sacrifice bunt scored Cea.
Buffenbarger picked up her fourth victory of the season and became the sixth player in program history to record at least 300 career strikeouts.
Against the Sycamores with the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Christy led off the frame with a double to right field. Avrey Schumacher walked and Hailey Roach's sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Romero slapped a single off the pitcher's leg that ricocheted in to left field and scored Christy with the game-winning run.
The Sycamores jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Lusk hit her second home run of the day and fifth of the season - a three-run homer - in the bottom of the third to give the Penguins a 3-2 edge.
A Sycamores solo home run tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
Youngstown State closes out the tournament against Butler, Sunday, at 2:15 p.m.
