Box Score Youngstown State scored in six different innings, and three different Penguins had more hits than Abilene Christian had as a team in a 9-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field.
The shutout capped another solid weekend for the Penguins, who showed the grit to battle back from being no-hit through 8.1 innings hit on Thursday to win the series against the Wildcats. Combined with Friday's 4-2 win, YSU's pitchers held Abilene Christian scoreless on five hits over the final 17 innings of the series.
Youngstown State improved to 4-5 on the season with the victory and won its second out of three series to begin the season. Abilene Christian dropped to 6-5.
While Colin Clark pitched a complete-game five-hitter in Friday's win, Collin Floyd led four pitchers who held the Wildcats to two hits in the combined shutout on Saturday. Floyd allowed two hits – an infield single to start the game and a two-out single in the fourth – over six innings, and Joel Hake, Chad Coles and Gary Clift Jr. each pitched hitless innings.
Hake took the mound for the 85th time as a Penguin to tie the school record for career appearances.
While YSU's pitchers allowed two hits over nine innings, Phillip Glasser, Dominick Bucko and Lucas Nasonti combined for 10 hits. Glasser was 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and Bucko and Nasonti both posted three hits. Seven different Penguins had hits in the game.
The Penguins got an unearned run in the top of the first as Jeff Wehler drew his first of three walks and came in to score on a two-out error. That was the first of eight runs that YSU scored with two outs.
Abilene Christian had early chances to score against Floyd, but he worked out of it both times. The first two Wildcat batters of the game reached as Tommy Cruz singled and Cameron Cromer walked. Floyd fielded his position well and threw out Cruz at third on a bunt for the first out, and the senior left-hander got cleanup batter Mitchell Dickson to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
Wehler walked and scored again in the third inning, and Nasonti singled in Bucko with two outs in the fourth to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.
The only time other than the first inning that ACU had two runners on was in the fourth when Colton Eager was hit by a pitch and Hunter Gieser hit a two-out single. Floyd got Ryne Randle to pop out to Glasser at shortstop to end the inning, and the Penguins went on to retire 16 of the final 18 Wildcat batters.
The Penguins did all of their scoring in the sixth after there were two outs as the extended their lead to 6-0. Nick Caruso started the offense with a single to right-center, and a Nasonti single and Wehler walk followed to load the bases. Glasser then hit a two-run single, and Wehler scored on an error.
Andre Good then hit a two-out, two-run double that plated Glasser and Steven D'Eusanio in the eighth, and YSU added another run in the ninth when Nasonti singled in Turner Grau.
Abilene Christian starter Nate Hawkins allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. Five Wildcats relievers followed, and YSU scored on three of them.
