Penguins Pick Up Two Wins On Sunday at 2020 Pirate Classic

Norfolk, Va. -- The Youngstown State softball team extended its winning streak to three games after a pair of wins at the 2020 Pirate Classic on Sunday.
The Penguins defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, and Norfolk State, 8-0, to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Against Sacred Heart, junior Elle Buffenbarger struck out 10 in her second straight complete-game shutout and allowed just three hits to earn her third win of the season. Buffenbarger flirted with her second straight no-hitter firing 5.2 hitless innings.
Junior Nikki Saibene and sophomore Alex DeLeon each had two hits while Saibene and sophomore Grace Cea each drove in a run.
The Penguins used a six-run first inning en route to the 8-0 win over Norfolk State.
Senior Maddi Lusk hit a two-run home run to start the scoring and also picked up the win in the circle. Lusk struck out four to pick up her second win.
Freshman Avrey Schumacher recorded a two-run single in the bottom of the first and senior Demi Ann Patonis added a run-scoring single in the first.
Saibene hit her first home run of the season, a two-run homer, in the bottom of the fourth to enforce the mercy rule.
Youngstown State returns to action against Belmont, Friday, March 6, at 5:30 p.m.
