Penguins Set Two Records on Second Day of Mid-Winter Invitational

Emma Dockery broke the school record for highest game, and the Youngstown State bowling team went 3-1 in head-to-head matches on Saturday at the Mid-Winter Invitational.
Dockery rolled a 267 in her first game of the day, which broke the previous school mark for highest game of 258 that was held by teammate Rachel Darrow and Alexis Grim. Dockery also bowled a 225 two matches later as the Penguins broke the school record for highest total in team match with a 1,117. That previous record was 1,073.
The Penguins will enter bracket play on Sunday in ninth place after two days of qualifying. The Penguins totaled 9,605 through 10 matches, two pins behind UAB. Youngstown State will take on Tulane to start the best-of-seven format.
"This may have been our most complete team day of the season," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm so proud of how wel lthe ladies stuck together and generated positive energy for each other all day. We had a lot of fun out there competing and feel great heading into bracket play."
Dockery finished 19th with a five-game total of 1,038, and Nikki Mendez was three spots behind her in 22nd with a total of 1,008. Emma Wrenn finished 26th with a 991, and Rachel Darrow was 36th with a 946. Megan Grams came on as a sub in the second match, and she went on to bowl a 596 in her three games, which included a 236 in the record-setting match.
Dockery threw the first eight strikes before leaving the 2 and 8 pins in the ninth frame in the first match of the day as YSU beat Alabama A&M 983-938. Mendez also bowled a 241 in that match. Youngstown State then knocked off No. 19 Maryville 876-773 before posting the record total of 1,117 in a win over No. 11 Louisiana Tech. The Penguins slowed to an 878 in an uncontested fourth match, and they lost 993-992 to No. 7 Stephen F. Austin in the finale.
Youngstown State will bowl in three bracket matches on Sunday beginning at 9:25 a.m. Eastern.
