Bowling Tops No. 2 Sam Houston State to Highlight Baker Play

The Youngstown State bowling team beat two ranked teams as part of a three-win day to start the Mid-Winter Invitational on Friday. The tournament is being hosted at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
The Penguins went 3-2 in their head-to-head matches and sit eighth in total pinfall after the first day of qualifying. YSU totaled 4,759 pins in their five Baker sets and average 190.4 per game.
"I love how we battled today," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "The communication was strong and we picked up lots of valuable information heading into tomorrow. Our last 12 games included some of our best shot-making and best energy all season, and we'll look to carry that momentum into tomorrow."
The Penguins won their opening match 988-949 over No. 16 Tulane, breaking 200 three times in their win over the Green Wave. YSU was edged by Drury 929-918 in its second match, and No. 3 Nebraska posted a 1,013 in a win over the Penguins in the middle bout of the day. Youngstown State bounced back to top No. 2 Sam Houston State 971-900 to get back to a .500 record, and the Penguins finished the day with their highest score of the round in a 1,009-843 win over Jackson State. YSU also had its highest single game of the day to start the match against JSU with a 244.
Youngstown State will try to move up the standings on Saturday with five traditional matches starting at 10:25 a.m. Eastern.
