St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands - The Youngstown State men's basketball team used an 11-0 run over the last 2:45 of the game to come away with a 74-71 win over Calgary at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.
The Penguins trailed 71-63 with less than three minutes left and applied their defensive pressure to come up with several steals that led to easy baskets and free throws. Michael Akuchie's putback got the Penguins within three, 71-68, and Darius Quisenberry's steal and layup cut the Penguins deficit to one, 71-70, with just 50 seconds left.
Naz Bohannon picked up a steal with 24.5 seconds left and his putback off a miss by Quisenberry with 15.6 seconds left gave the Penguins the lead, 72-71.
After another steal by Bohannon, Garrett Covington was fouled and sealed the victory with two made free throws with 2.3 seconds left.
Akuchie led the Penguins with 14 points, while Quisenberry had 13 points and Tyler Foster added 10 points. Bohannon grabbed 14 rebounds with six points and four steals.
Youngstown State plays the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team, Thursday, at 3 p.m.
