11/21/2019 12:00:00 AM | Bowling
The Youngstown State bowling team will compete in its final tournament of the fall semester this weekend as it travels to Millsboro, Del., for the Hawk Classic Invitational. Maryland Eastern Shore will host the tournament at Millsboro Lanes.
Video of the Penguins' matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel or BowlTV.com. BowlTV has exclusive streaming rights for matches bowled on lanes 5-12 at the tournament. Updates will also be provided on YSU's Twitter account (@ysubowling).
Tournament Format
The Hawk Classic Invitational will follow the traditional structure of a three-day tournament. The 23rd-ranked Penguins will compete in five sets of five-game Baker matches on Friday beginning at 9:55 a.m., and five traditional matches will follow on Saturday starting at 9:55 a.m. The total pinfall from the first two days of qualifying will determine seeds for bracket play on Sunday, and teams will compete in three best-of-seven Baker matches to decide the final standings. Sunday's action will begin at 8:25 a.m.
Previewing The Field
The Hawk Classic Invitational will feature 18 teams in the field, which is the largest field among YSU's five fall tournaments. Fifteen of the 18 teams were ranked in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 Poll, and five teams from the Southland Bowling League will be in Delaware. Top-ranked Vanderbilt is one of six teams ranked in the top 10, and there are also five teams ranked between 11th and 16th and four teams ranked between 20th and 25th. YSU will bowl against the No. 1 Commodores to finish Baker play on Friday, and the Penguins are scheduled to compete against nine ranked teams during qualifying.

Recapping the SFA Ladyjack Hammer Classic
Youngstown State finished seventh at the SFA Ladyjack Hammer Classic in Kenosha, Wis., last week against a talented field. The Penguins went 6-4 in head-to-head play during qualifying, and they beat No. 10 Wisconsin-Whitewater twice in bracket play on Sunday to secure seventh. YSU finished ahead of the 10th-ranked Warhawks, No. 16 Saint Francis U, No. 18 Maryville and No. 22 Adelphi. Individually, Rachel Darrow was the top finisher with a 16th-place score of 1,028. Nikki Mendez was 24th with a 1,001, and Enma Wrenn finished 27th with a 991. Emma Dockery and Sarah Florence placed 34th and 39th, respectively.
Up Next
Youngstown State will have a two-month break before beginning its spring schedule at the Red Flash Invitational on Jan. 24-26. That will be the first of four regular-season tournaments in the spring as YSU gears up for the Southland Bowling League Championship on March 20-22 in Conroe, Texas.
