The Youngstown State defeated 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater twice in bracket play on Sunday to finish the SFA Ladyjack Hammer Classic in seventh place. The tournament was held at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.
The Penguins rallied from a 3-0 deficit in their first match against the Warhawks to win 4-3, and they claimed the rematch in five games.
"Today was a solid day of growing together," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We brought consistent energy today shot-to-shot, no matter the situation, and the ladies had each other's backs throughout the day."
YSU was seeded seventh in bracket play, and it won the final four games in the best-of-seven Baker format 227-153, 211-200, 249-197 and 233-198 in the No. 7 seed vs. No. 8 seed match. The Penguins then fell in five games to Arkansas State, which was ranked sixth in the NTCA Top 25 Poll and seeded fifth at the tournament, before bouncing back to beat Wisconsin-Whitewater again to secure seventh place.
Nebraska went 3-0 on Sunday and shot a 300 Baker game to climb from fourth in the standings up to first. The Huskers were followed by McKendree, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Vanderbilt and Arkansas State. The 23rd-ranked Penguins finished ahead of No. 10 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 22 Adelphi, No. 18 Maryville and No. 16 Saint Francis U.
Youngstown State's final tournament of the fall semester will be next weekend at the Hawk Classic. Maryland Eastern Shore will host the tournament at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del., on Friday through Sunday.
