The Youngstown State bowling team put forth another solid effort on Saturday at the SFA Ladyjack Hammer Classic and finished with a 3-2 record in head-to-head play.
The Penguins totaled 4,918 pins over their five team games, which is their third-best mark for team play in program history. The Penguins broke 950 in all five games and topped 1,000 in their first two matches. YSU's total pinfall through five Baker games on Friday and Saturday's five team games was 9,887, which will seed them seventh for bracket play on Sunday.
Rachel Darrow was the top individual finisher for the Penguins with a total of 1,028. The senior topped 180 in all five games and bowled at least 215 three times. Fellow senior Nikki Mendez finished 24th with a 1,001, and Emma Wrenn was the next Penguin finisher in 27th, just 10 pins behind Mendez. Emma Dockery was 34th with a 973, and Sarah Florence was 39th with a 925.
"I'm proud of the patience we showed throughout the day," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "The ladies are showing a lot of mental toughness, and I feel like the ingredients are there for a strong finish to the weekend. We'll keep things simple and continue to play our game."
YSU's two highest totals of the day actually came in their only two losses. The Penguins lost 1,137-1,010 to Sam Houston State, which claimed the top spot through two days of qualifying. YSU then fell 1,086-1,007 to Stephen F. Austin before knocking off Saint Francis U (973-847), Wisconsin-Whitewater (958-956) and Marian (970-732).
The Penguins will have a rematch with Wisconsin-Whitewater to begin bracket play on Sunday. The first of YSU's three matches will begin at 9:30 a.m.
