Recapping Last Week
Youngstown State claimed its first tournament title in program history last week at its first home tournament. The Penguins were the highest-scoring team all weekend, and they finished off the Columbia 300 Penguin Classic at Holiday Bowl in Struthers by going 3-0 in bracket play on Sunday. YSU beat No. 6 Arkansas State twice on Championship Sunday to finish off the win.
Individually, junior newcomer Sarah Florence and senior Nikki Mendez both finished in the top four to earn all-tournament team honors. Florence led for most of the day on Saturday but slipped to second when Kentucky Wesleyan's Angelique McKeny bowled a 300 in the fifth game. Florence finished with a total of 1,093 pins, which was a new school record for highest pinfall in a tournament. Mendez placed fourth with a 1,044, and Emma Wrenn (992) and Emma Dockery (941) also placed in the top 13.
Up Next
Youngstown State will be idle the final weekend of October. The Penguins will compete in three tournaments over the first four weekends of November, beginning with the Track Kat Klash on Nov. 1-3.
