Thompson-Cappadocio Leads Softball to Split on Day One at UNC-Wilmington Tournament

Wilmington, N.C. -- Senior Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio drove in a career-high five runs and led the Youngstown State softball team to a 10-2 five inning win over North Carolina A&T on Friday. The Penguins also lost to Sacred Heart, 2-1.

The Penguins improve to 5-12 overall and snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Thompson-Cappadocio went 2-for-2 and had a two-run single in the bottom of the second and a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the third in lead the Penguins. Senior Alexis Roach went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and sophomore Tatum Christy also drove in two runs with on sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single.

The Penguins scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and the six more in the bottom of the third to build an insurmountable lead.

Junior Paige Geanangel picked up her third win of the year, tossing four innings and striking out two.

Against Sacred Heart, Geanangel struck out five and scattered eight hits in a hard-luck, complete-game loss.

Freshman Yazmine Romero had three of the Penguins' five hits and Youngstown State 11 runners.

The Penguins face UNC-Wilmington and North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
