Brian Campbell Becomes Softball's All-Time Coaching Wins Leader After Pair of Victories

Wilmington, N.C. -- Brian Campbell became the Youngstown State softball program's all-time winningest coach with 208 victories after the Penguins picked up a pair of wins at the UNC-Wilmington Tournament on Saturday. YSU defeated UNC-Wilmington, 3-2, and North Carolina A&T, 11-5.
Campbell, who has 493 career wins, broke the record of of 207 set by YSU Hall of Fame Head Coach Ed Strauss, who coached the Penguins from 1985-95.
Junior Lexi Zappitelli posted a monster day going 7-for-8, including seven straight hits, with four runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Penguins offensively.
In the opener against UNC-Wilmington, junior Paige Geanangel tossed a complete game to pick up her fourth win of the year. Zappitelli went 3-for-3 with a run scored while senior Stevie Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Against North Carolina A&T, the Penguins tied the school single-game record with 20 hits led by Zappitelli's 4-of-5 outing. She scored three times, had two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. Freshman Yazmine Romero totaled three hits while seniors Hannah Lucas, Alexis Roach and Stevie Taylor and freshman Nikki Saibene each had two hits.
The Penguins scored three runs in both the top of the first and second innings then added two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the seventh to pull away for the 11-5 win.
Freshman Elle Buffenbarger struck out six to pick up her second win of the season.
The Penguins close out their spring break trip against UNC-Wilmington, Sunday, at 10 a.m.
