Five players scored in double figures led by sophomore Garrett Covington's 15 points, but a late second-half run lifted Western Michigan past the Youngstown State men's basketball team, 88-77, on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins fall to 3-8 while the Broncos improve to 5-4.
Junior Kendale Hampton scored 14 points with four 3-pointers, while freshman Darius Quisenberry and junior Antwan Maxwell, Jr. each had 11 points and Donel Cathcart III added 10.
Leading Western Michigan was Michael Flowers with 25 points while Josh Davis had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jared Printy posted 14 points.
The Penguins trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half with the aide of 11 Western Michigan 3-pointers and trailed by 11, 49-38, at the intermission. Youngstown State scored the first seven points of the second half on a jumper by Cathcart, a layup by Covington and a 3-pointer by Quisenberry to get within four, 49-45, with 18:11 left.
The Broncos rebuilt their lead to nine, 54-45, but the Penguins went on a 13-2 run keyed by a pair of layups by Covington and capped by a putback and a 3-pointer by Maxwell to take a 58-56 lead at the 11:50 mark. It was the Penguins' first lead since owning a 6-5 advantage at the 18 minute mrk of the first half.
YSU scored just one point and would not make a field goal over the next 6:29 as the Broncos went on a 17-1 run to take a 73-59 lead with 6:15 to go.
Western Michigan pushed its leads to as many as 18, 82-64, and the Penguins would eventually get within nine, 86-77, after a Hampton's fourth 3-pointer with 31 seconds left.
