Box Score The Youngstown State softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap an 8-7 come-from-behind victory and complete the season series sweep over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 26-26 overall and 14-7 in the Horizon League, and recorded their ninth straight Horizon League win and the third straight series sweep.
Senior Sarah Dowd went 2-for-3with a solo home run and senior Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Senior Caitlyn Minney struck out seven in five innings and allowed three hits to pick up the victory. Junior Hannah Lucas went 2-for-3 and scored two runs and freshman Elizabeth Birkbeck posted a two-run single.
Down 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth, Birkbeck's two-out, two-run pinch-hit single scored Dowd and freshman Maddi Lusk, who both singled, to tie the game. After a walk to Lucas loaded the bases, freshman Tatum Christy scored on a wild pitch with the eventual game-winning run.
Cleveland State scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Moffatt's run-scoring single that plated Lucas cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Penguins took a 4-3 lead after scoring three in the bottom half of the second inning. Taylor and Lucas scored on a two-out error that tied the game and Cali Mikovich scored on Moffatt's double to right-center field.
The Vikings took a 7-4 lead after Aubrie Tone hit a grand slam in the top of the third inning. Dowd cut into the Vikings lead with a solo home run in to bottom half of the frame to get within two, 7-5.
The Penguins close out the regular season with a three-game series at Detroit Mercy, May 5-6, in Detroit, Mich.
