Penguins Top Robert Morris for Fourth Straight Win

The Youngstown State volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Tuesday night, beating Robert Morris in four competitive sets at the Sewall Center. The set scores were 31-29, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23.
The Penguins had a balanced offensive attack with five players recording at least nine kills. Middle blockers Sarah Varcolla (14) and Lori Vanbeek (13) combined for 27 kills, Sam Brown posted 11, Morgan Tippie registered a career-best 10, and Valor Haggerty notched nine. Brown added 15 digs, and Vanbeek contributed on nine of YSU's 12 blocks. Val Jeffery had 15 digs to go along with her 48 assists, and Dana Borsz led the squad with 17 digs.
Both teams rallied from sizable deficits in the first two sets as the match was tied at 1-1. YSU trailed 19-12 in the opening before a 9-1 run gave it a 21-20 lead. The Penguins staved off two set points down 24-22, and they saved five more set points before earning the win with three straight points on a Varcolla kill, a Vanbeek block and a Haggerty kill. YSU jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set before falling 26-24.
The Penguins led by seven five times in the third set, the last time at 20-13 before the Colonials went on a four-point spurt to get within three. RMU eventually got within one at 22-21 and at 23-22 when a Haggery kill and a Varcolla block ended the set.
The largest margin in the fourth set was four, a 13-9 advantage by Robert Morris. The Colonials held a 22-19 lead before Youngstown State scored six of the final seven points behind Jeffery's serve.
Youngstown State will play three matches this weekend at the Flyer Invitational in Dayton.
