Volleyball Starts Weekend with Four-Set Loss to Salukis

The Youngstown State volleyball team began a competitive stretch of matches on Friday with a four-set loss to Southern Illinois at the Flyer Classic. The set scores were 25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21.
Lori Vanbeek kept up her recent offensive prowess with a match-high 19 kills, and Sam Brown was next with 16 kills. Heather Splinter had a career-high 13 digs to lead the defense.
The Penguins were hurt at the service line in the loss to the Salukis. YSU committed 10 serving errors, and SIU registered nine aces. That offset Youngstown State's 57-48 edge in kills. Southern Illinois also had 12.5 blocks compared to YSU's five.
Youngstown State will play a pair of matches on Saturday at the Flyer Classic. YSU will play Dayton at 1 p.m. and Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m.
