The Youngstown State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Fort Wayne Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place on Saturday, falling in straight sets to the host Mastodons (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) and losing in five sets to Murray State (25-17, 15-25, 26-28, 25-19, 15-8).
Lori Vanbeek posted a career-high 18 kills against the Racers, and she added nine against the Mastodons. Sam Brown registered double digits in kills in both matches, finishing with 11 against Fort Wayne and 14 against Murray State. Dana Borsz reached a new career high in digs with 22 in the five-setter against Murray State.
After sweeping Ball State in the 2016 season opener on Friday night, YSU was on the short end of a sweep to start Saturday. The Penguins couldn't slow down Fort Wayne's offense as the Mastodons hit at least .324 in each set and .343 for the match. Lauren Hoffman had 13 kills without committing an error in 19 attempts for Fort Wayne.
Against Murray State, Vanbeek had three kills in each of the first two sets as the match was tied at 1-1, and she posted six of YSU's 17 kills in the Penguins' 28-26 win in the third. YSU led the third 22-12 before Murray State went on a 13-2 run to have a set point at 25-24. Sarah Varcolla's kill tied the score at 25-25, and Vanbeek had a kill to save another set point at 26-25. Vanbeek then finished the set with a block assist alongside Valor Haggerty.
Murray State closed out the fourth set on a 10-3 run to tie the match, and the fifth ended on a 13-2 Racers run.
Youngstown State finished with 17 blocks in the match, but it was also whistled for 10 blocking errors. Varcolla had nine blocks, Vanbeek posted eight and Haggerty blocked seven attacks.
YSU will play host to Duquesne in its Beeghly Center opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. It will be the first athletic contest played on the new Rosselli Court, which was refurbished and redesigned over the summer.
